EINSTEIN’S Substantial Concept is an absolutely fantastic documentary. This film truly sets the standard for NOVa and makes me lament the fact that more programming isn’t done like this. If only the amount of money that goes into general programming went into PBS. That would be something else.

Buy,Download, Or Stream NOVA: Einstein’s Big Idea! Click HereBut enough of my have ridiculous desires. EINSTEIN’S Titanic Understanding chronicles some of the most enchanting scientific work that has been done in the last couple of centuries. It is an belief so sizable that its implications have been great, not unprejudiced within the fields of science & mathematics, but in our society and culture at grand. NOVA also shows how Einstein’s achievement was not the overjoyed accident we often search for it as. Instead, this documentary seeks to situate his discovery by exploring the lives of other pioneers in related fields, richly filling out the personal lives of these scientists and, above all, situating their achievements in a rich history and context.

In the extinguish, EINSTEIN’S Mountainous Understanding accomplishes two goals. First, I came away from the program with a bunch of ideas and information swimming in my head, the result of handing me the information in a digestible format. Second, I was entertained throughout the entire program. It truly didn’t feel like I was learning–I was being entertained.

It would have been a treat! If you haven’t seen the kindly NOVA lineup, I suggest that you remedy it with a liberal dose! Contented viewing!

This program has more science than (Einstein Revealed, Newton’s Dim Secrets and The Handsome Universe), although Newton’s Murky Secrets has its moments.

Einstein’s Titanic Plan is about the many contributions of earlier scientists leading Einstein to arrive up with E=mc2. It’s also about the later usefulness of E=mc2 in nuclear physics. Unlike Einstein Revealed, which is a anecdote almost entirely about the life of Einstein (private and public), Einstein’s Large Understanding is a myth about science with its ups and downs. There are also some people stories as well, but they are added for dramatic value, which in my notion helps instead of hinders the program.

I highly recommend this program for anyone who is fervent in the evolution of scientific ideas (7 stars) .

And what a battle it is. Frieza’s true fighting power is finally revealed in this amazing DVD. The first episode on this DVD is an all out fight between Goku and Frieza in which they both show some weird attacks that are great to watch. This includes Frieza playing “pinball” with Goku. (Well, that’s what the back of the DVD calls it at least.) In the second episode, Frieza finally reveals how powerful he really is as the fight moves on. The episode also contains an amazingly funny filler debacle that will span three epsisodes. (The rest of this DVD and the first episode on the next DVD, Desperation.)

Yes, this three-episode filler debacle is where Captain Ginyu switches bodies with Bulma and the chaos that follows. The conclusion to it is in the next DVD, so be sure to check that out. The final episode shows Frieza reach new powers which are really high. He starts to take down Goku and the battle is incredible. As for the actual DVD features, there are no extra’s, but you should be used to this. The cover is a screenshot from the DVD, but it is sort of misleading. It makes it look like Goku is winning when he is not. Anyway, this DVD is superb and deffinetaly a must-buy.

This is a must have DVD. I love it because it comes with the uncut episodes and also in jap. How much better can it get. The japanese episodes are so cool that you cant miss out on them. This is one of the best sagas in DBZ because this is when Goku turns into a Super Saiya-jin. This is a must have so hurry up and order it already. Trust me its worth the money.

It was an odd year. 1976 saw the release of Logan’s Run with its occasionally heavy handed parable about the youth culture, Ralph Bakshi’s Wizards gathered steam at the box office and included a trailer for some movie called Star Wars. Along came Nicolas Roeg with his arthouse science fiction epic and totally mystified everyone. David Bowie is perfect as the alien in this classic science fiction film. He’s left his arid, dying planet and come to Earth in hopes that some of “his” inventions could create enough capital so that he can take resources from our planet to save his.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Man Who Fell to Earth - Criterion Collection! Click Here

Unfortunately, Bowie’s character pretends to be human all too well–he’s sucked into the very flaws that cripple humanity. He becomes a victim of our culture rather than master of it. Roeg’s film is fragmented and spooky (particularly the scene where Candy Clark discovers that Bowie’s character has various attachments to make him seem human). The visually unsettling photography and editing help bring an edge to the film. Roeg manages to fuse science fiction to his European art sensibilities very well. In fact, Man is probably Roeg’s most powerful film outside of Don’t Look Now his gothic take on the horror film.

I’ll get to the point about the difference between the excellent Anchor Bay release and the Criterion release. Both studios had released this film for the first time (there was a previous Fox-Lorber bare bones edition). The Criterion edition looks sharper with better clarity and richer color than the Anchor Bay edition. Detail is better on the Criterion edition and there appears that the Anchor Bay release wasn’t digitally restored as the colors are a bit muted and faded in some sequences. Both feature the full length European cut that Roeg intended for the US market as well. The 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound mix for the Anchor Bay is superior to the 2.0 original soundtrack on the Criterion. The entire sound system is used nicely but keep in mind this was never meant to sound as aggressive as the 5.1 ES (or 6.1) releases of more recent movies.

As to the extras, both have excellent extras. The Anchor Bay features a short documentary “Watching the Alien” (a great play on words related to one of Bowie’s songs as well as the film), the original theatrical trailer, TV spots, talent bios, a good poster and still gallery as well as Paul Mayersberg’s original screenplay in DVD-ROM format. All of these are great extras to be sure and are included on the second disc which allows for a higher bit rate for the movie and, hence, very good video as well. A note about the packaging–Anchor Bay’s edition of the movie was fine but came in a very flimsy case with a slip over sleeve. When you took that off the movie and extras disc were held by flimsy plastic holder. The exterior had an image from the original poster and there was a short booklet included as well discussing the film. While normally I could care less about packaging it does bug me when it’s as poorly designed as this one which seems like a compromise between an Amray (hard plastic) and snapcase (what Warner used until recently for all their releases). It doesn’t stand up to wear and tear well and the discs could potential fall out.

Criterion’s transfer is a new, restored high definition digital transfer supervised by Roeg (which explains the color corrections compared to the Anchor Bay edition which was pulled from restored negatives but done three years before). The audio commentary isn’t new but is from 1992 (I believe it may be the same one on the original Criterion laserdisc release) and features Roeg and star David Bowie recorded together and Buck Henry recorded on his own. The commentary track is exceptional but that will only matter if commentary tracks are important to you. Some folks never listen to them and never take more than a cursory look at the extras. The second disc includes excellent audio interviews with May Routh who designed the costumes and production designer Brian Eatwell. There’s another audio interview with author Walter Tevis recorded in 1984 in which Tevis discusses his novel and the film. There’s some great stills, behind-the-scenes photos dominate these and were taken by David James. This section features an introduction by James. The trailers are included as is Tevis’ original novel. Finally there’s a 28 page critical essay by Graham Fuller about the film and an appreciation of novelist Tevis by another novelist Jack Matthews. Criterion’s packaging has the movie in a hard Amray two disc holder and, in turn, within a cardboard cover that houses the movie and the novel. It’s very nice and will stand up a better to wear and tear.

Both versions have their strong points. If you purchased the Anchor Bay edition and are satisfied with the exceptional transfer, then you may not want to purchase this new set. The crisper, sharper images and richer colors for the Criterion is the strong selling point while the audio 5.1 on the Anchor Bay has nice presence and sounds better than the audio mix for the Criterion edition. The extras for both are quite good although the commentary track gives the Criterion edition the edge in my mind. The image quality and color are better on the Criterion Edition of “Man” but the Anchor Bay remixed sound has the edge for audio. If you don’t have the Anchor Bay or are looking to upgrade to a better looking picture, the Criterion is the stronger of the two. Criterion wins by a nose due to the extra featurettes and audio commentary as well as the Roeg supervised transfer.

A thin, pale, androgynous David Bowie is THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH — Special Edition (Anchor Bay), a two-disc set of Nicolas Roeg’s film.

Previously available on DVD, this widescreen (enhanced for 16×9 TVs) edition looks sharper, the clean DTS surround sound is THX approved and there’s a new, interesting 24 minute featurette, “Watching the Alien.”

Slow moving and beautifully photographed, this movie adaptation is faithful in theme to Walter Tevis’s novel. An alien being, disguised as a human, comes to earth to seek a way to save his home planet from turning into an arid wasteland. He funds this project by designing inventions worth gazillions and becomes bigger than Bill Gates. Unfortunately, he also becomes contaminated by our earthly ways and sinks into a mystical malaise of depression and alcohol. A sweet and chirpy Candy Clark lures him into an affair that, strangely, doesn’t help.

This hypnotic and provocative film long ago achieved cult status. More than anything, it’s a visual meditation about an outsider, stymied by material success, who is on a journey back to a home that cannot in fact be reached. (Hey, who can’t relate to that?)

Fully restored and uncensored (there’s full frontal nudity), this new digital transfer is from original materials. Recommended.

LADY SNOWBLOOD (1973) is a starkly beautiful Japanese swordplay drama featuring a female fighter, Shurayuki Hime (Lady Snowblood), or Yuki for short, whose mission in life is to track down and slay three of the four villains who brutalized her mother and killed the mother’s husband and son. It takes place in the 1890s, in Meiji-era Japan, and includes several helpful flashbacks to provide the context for Yuki’s mission. Born in prison–her mother was there for killing the first of the villains and died after childbirth–Yuki is raised by a Buddhist reverend who calls her a “child of the netherworld” and trains her in the fighting arts. Tall and regal, beautiful and ghostly white, Lady S (played by Meiko Kaji) looks too pure to sully herself with bloodletting, a tack which gives her the element of surprise in her many swordfights.

The film is divided into four chapters and is based on a manga written by Kazuo Koike, who also wrote the “Lone Wolf and Cub” and “Crying Freeman” manga series. At one point in Chapter Three, Yuki meets a writer (Toshio Kurosawa) who publishes a newspaper (”a cheap little rag”) and tells Yuki’s story, accompanied by manga-like illustrations, making her a legend in her own time and causing her considerable dismay. There’s a bit of stylization in the fighting as Yuki leaps up impossible heights and causes blood to gush out like a fountain whenever she slices or dismembers an opponent, but otherwise the film has a deceptive simplicity as Yuki moves like a wraith through small villages and the back alleys of Tokyo in her inexorable quest for vengeance. There is a lot of action and bloodshed, so fans of samurai and yakuza films should be satisfied. The tape is presented in a flawless letter-boxed transfer, in Japanese with English subtitles.

Meiko Kaji (who also starred in the FEMALE CONVICT SCORPION series) plays the title role and sings the theme song, “Flower of Carnage.” Quentin Tarantino drew on this film as part of the inspiration for the Lucy Liu character, O-Ren Ishii, in KILL BILL VOL. 1 (2003) and also uses “Flower of Carnage” on his soundtrack. As impressive as KILL BILL is, fans who want to experience the formal beauty of the original form–seen here in a deftly-blended mix of samurai, ninja, yakuza, and manga motifs–need to go back to films like this. And judging from recent Japanese genre releases, e.g. RETURNER, ONMYOJI, and PRINCESS BLADE (itself a flashy contemporary reworking of LADY SNOWBOOD), to name a few, it’s clear that, aside from KILL BILL, “they just don’t make ‘em like that anymore.”

I’ll be honest, I rented this film strictly because I love Kill Bill and I was curious to see where Tarantino culled his imagery and ideas. I’m very glad I did, and it’s why I think Kill Bill is a very important bridge between modern cinema and cult and foreign film that, lets face it, most of us miss out on. This film is a very beautiful and poetic look at revenge and love. The title character, Yuki, is born into and raised with a single ideology, vengeance. She knows no love, except for that of her deceased parents and brother, nor hate, except for her enemies who killed her father and brother and tortured her mother. The film follows Yuki on her journey to find and enact her vengeance on these four villains. Though the plot is fairly simple, it’s well crafted and manages to sidestep what could be easy static characterization for very well drawn character arcs. The action and swordplay are beautiful and wonderfully over the top, as are the settings, story devices (like the use of paintings and manga to depict flashback and plot explanation), and special FX (lots of arterial blood sprays.) For fans of Kill Bill, this film is the basis for the O-Ren Ishii character. Other references are similar settings (the fight at the end of the House of Blue Leaves sequence), numbered chapters, music, the afore mentioned arterial blood sprays, very similar character development, freeze frames with character identification, a very similar rouges gallery upward camera shot, and a mixture of live action and animation/manga.

This 35 minute documentary really illustrates the quality and heroism of the people that died on September 11, 2001 in New York.

This film is a brief tribute to a few of them. Particularly the Vigiano family that lost two sons (a firefighter and a police officer)in the World Trade Centers. These men and those like them were heroes and civic role models.

No greater love has a person than to lay down ones life for a friend.

After watching this film, I am moved to say thank you to every police officer, firefighter and first response person. I was saddened by the tragedy but also extremely encouraged to get a glimpse at the quality of goodness in the people that helped save so many lives that day.

“The Twin Towers” started out as a documentary about the New York City Police Department’s Emergency Services Team (EST), the elite group of police officers that deal with everything from suicidal people determined to jump off bridges to hostage situations. The story of these heroic young men so intrigued television producer Dick Wolf (best known for the “Law & Order” series) that he began this documentary as a means of selling a network on committing to a series based on the day-to-day lives of these men and their fascinating job. It’s entirely conceivable that such a show would have come to fruition, had not the events at the World Trade Center taken place.

As noted by the editorial review, this documentary feels abruptly cut short: after all, the main subject of the piece, DET Joseph V. Vigiano, died in the September 11th attacks. What began as a look at the lives and work of the EST becomes a memorial to what we lost that day in the form of a father who lost his two sons (Det. Joseph Viggiano and his brother John, a NYC fireman) in the attacks.

It is the incompleteness of this documentary, and the profound sense of unfulfilled curiosity about the men it profiles, that leads me to grant the story four stars instead of five. In no way is it an idictment of its ability to stir and inspire.

I got to laughing and wanted to put in a review just thinking about this Stand-up show. I was thinking about it because I was buying it fourth time as this is the third time we used is as a gift for a family.

We first heard Tim on the Ion Channel, and it piqued my curiosity. We bought this album as well as his “I’m No Rock Star” concert (of comedy, that is). “Full Range” is a bit more explicitly Christian and plays to a church-like audience in Texas. The “Rock Star” album is in a much larger venu, but is less intimate. There is NO overlap of jokes. That is right, two complete albums with new material on each.

I’ve played “I’m No Rock Star” for people of no religious persuasion and they found it funny. I’ve not tried that with this album. I think they’ll get most of the humor, but it does help to be part of a religious community–at least to the point of participating in group prayer (where he finds some foibles to skewer).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Tim Hawkins: Full Range of Motion! Click Here

Whereas in “Rock Star” Tim has fun with secular music, in this one he has a bit of fun with contemporary Christian music. Not offensive, but it just helps to know the songs.

Great video! Tim Hawkin’s is hilariously funny and one of the best christian comedians I’ve ever heard.

I loved the original theatrical release of The Year of Living Dangerously. I watched it over and over. It was a beautiful, sensuous film. This is not the original. This DVD was the work of some hack who left the best parts of the movie on the cutting room floor. Gone is much of the gamelan music, many scenic shots of Indonesian countryside, and one of the hotest make-out scenes in cinematic history. Just as Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver are about to go at it the scene abruptly ends. Even the sequence of the original is changed. The over all effect is a coursening of what had been a classic. This was such a dark and murky print I still wonder if I somehow got a bootleg copy surreptitiously videotaped by some artless thug. I feel angry and cheated.
I recommend waiting until the original version is released. DON’T BUY THIS TRASH!

What is this film about? Is it about political corruption and intrigue? Is it about how revolutionary movements start by promising a lot and end by delivering little? Is it about the conflict between love and duty? Or perhaps the cynicism of the press and the various and conflicting goals? The film could be about how hard it is to overcome fear and superstition. Maybe it is about doing small things to make the world better, but then reverting to dramatic acts when the small things don’t work.

Mel Gibson is a novice reporter for Australian news recently assigned to Indonesia. He wants to make a splash and climb the reportorial hierarchy. Billy Kwan (Linda Hunt in a stellar performance) takes him under his wing and educates him about poverty and teaches him to recognize the shadow play of politics. Billy also introduces him to Jill (Sigourney Weaver). They fall in love and have a wonderful scene in the rain. He commits a dramatic act that costs him dearly. (I don’t want to give away everything.) Through it all we meet a cast of characters - reporters and diplomats - who are in turns fascinating and loathsome.

The movie is beautifully photographed. The music adds to the atmosphere. Since I reserve a 5 star rating for true classics, this film gets only a 4. However I do recommend it very strongly.

It always seems that WWI movies covered the European Theater more, as far as Blockbusters are concerned… “Longest Day”, “Bridge to Far”, “Patton”, “Guns of Navarone”, “Saving Private Ryan”. Obvious the Pacific had the multitude of John Wayne Movies, but right epics either dealt with Pearl Harbor or Midway, nothing else existed it seems. Then I glimpse “In Harms Plot” . This movie is a moral classic, with a trustworthy cast including Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Dana Andrews, Patricia Neal (may be one of her best), Henry Fonda, Burgess Merredith and many more. This a “just grit” battle of the Pacific memoir which we need more of. Its description of sea battles both before and after are classic, and the movies lenght is not noticed since you are continually enthusiastic in it. Buy,Download, Or Stream In Harm’s Way! The filming and actions sequences for its day are outstanding, and behold you bass speakers or you will lose some china! Seeing this movie on REGULAR TV is not a apt understanding. Is like seeing a original movie! A give this movie a standing thumbs up. This is one of the Dukes BEST.

Why do I like this movie so remarkable? It’s an gracious sage with a first-rate cast, an OK cherish epic and … special effects. I like “The Duke”, Partricia Neal and Kirk Douglas, but so? The acknowledge is that I reflect that “In Harm’s Scheme” captures the spirit of the American Navy in World War II in a approach perfect way; it shows flawed men and women trying to do their best under appalling conditions. It also shows the backstabbing and deceit that occasionally marked the rivalry between some commanders. Some parts saunter a bit, but the overall enact, for me, is a movie that I have (and will) see over and over. Despite its age, it spins a profitable yarn; the characters are believeable and though-provoking. Wayne has delivered many lovely performances (reflect “The Detached Man”, “The Searchers” and John Ford’s cavalry trilogy) and his portrayal of Admiral Rockwell Torrey is one of them. In his committment to the Navy, his growing adore for Nurse Maggir Haynes, and his conflict with his son, Wayne is at his top gain. Neal, in her post stroke first appearance is equally kindly. OK, the expend of dreadful models to report naval ships is off-putting, but it’s the characters and the epic that captures the viewer. The DVD is all that could be asked for short of a re-make of the film. It remains one of my favorites.

I was an adult when Inspector Gadget: The Original Series first appeared on the air and I loved the show from the start! I am autistic, I loved plain old animated TV stuff long after most older folk have moved on. I just liked Gadget because, he was different and trying to do good for others in the world despite it all. I like anyone who is different struggling to meet the life’s challenges as they come with a smile and an indomitable spirit hence Gadget proved to be my kind of people :).

Gadget was also fun because, he was a technical person but kind of scatter brained like me. Gadget was misunderstood by most people and had only a few close but good friends making him very easy for me to like. Gadget had a good heart always filled with love and hope despite it all and that means something awesome in my book too. Maybe caring about things on TV is an autistic thing if so I do like such nice gentle themed television shows an aweful lot! For me good characters on TV shows are like pleasant friends you visit with for a time. I am not good at the complexity of real social skills so I watch lots of TV study the characters to see what makes them good.

I was glad I got this DVD set. It was a big improvement over the cheap Sterling/UAV Gadget DVDs “The Gadget Files” and “Inspector Gadget Saves Christmas.” The first 22 episodes are there, including the original pilot, with Gadget’s mustache! Like I did with the Sterling DVDs, it’s time to give it my “Gadget Factors…”

PROS

The original episodes are there, of course.

There is some cool special features, such as the interview with the show’s creators and the original art gallery!

The pilot has its original dialogue (since reruns of this episode had badly-done new voiceovers explaining Gadget’s mustache was a fake.) Plus, the pilot episode has its original opening and closing titles, featuring Gadget’s mustache throughout them!

CONS

There’s some noticable DVNR on some episodes.

And of course, like the other Gadget DVDs, there’s the following edits…

EDITS

The title of an episode is electronically added at the start of most episodes during the beginning of the first scene. When these cartoons originally aired, including their Nickelodeon reruns, they had no episode titles! This probably wasn’t really needed.

The original DiC logo featuring Inspector Gadget dotting the “i” was cut. It was replaced with the “Incredible World of DiC” logo on most episodes, though a couple of episodes have the famous 1990s “Kid in Bed” DiC logo tacked onto it. This was quite unneccesary. However, the original late-70s/early-80s LBS logo is intact on all episodes, which you might remember if you saw this show on Nickelodeon back in the 90s.

I have been waiting for quite some time ever since I got my “Gadget Files” DVD for a company to release a box set of Gadget episodes, and it’s finally happened!

All in all, I wholeheartedly recommend it to those who are big fans of the show, or those who are dying to see this classic cartoon again!

Ronnie is a mall cop with gargantuan dreams: he wants to be a cop. Partly to carry a gun, partly so people will finally respect him. When a flasher appears on his turf, it’s war–especially when one of the victims is Brandi, the makeup-counter girl whom Ronnie has a crush on. But when a valid detective intrudes in the case, Ronnie decides to rob matters in his beget hands–to salvage respect, to derive the case, and to come by the girl.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Observe and Report! Click HereOBSERVE AND Portray is perhaps the darkest comedy in ages. Seth Rogen does not play Ronnie as a beloved character, as many a lesser actor would; in Rogen’s hands, Ronnie is a borderline-sociopath, a bipolar loser who is as hilariously tranquil as he is perilous. Anna Farris, as Brandi, is a comedic delight as always; she throws her self-esteem to the wind in order to wring the last exiguous laugh from every scene. Michael Pena, as Ronnie’s sidekick, is a scene-stealer. However, it’s Ray Liotta who walks away with the only character to acquire his beget against Ronnie; as Detective Harrison, Liotta is tough and unforgiving, and the climax between the two ends the only method it could (though you’ll be holding your breath the whole plot) .

In other words, Jody Hill’s Examine AND Describe is the darkest of shadowy comedies, often bordering on a (non-supernatural) fear movie; the comparisons it’s garnered to TAXI DRIVER are well-founded, and often-times you don’t know whether to wince or laugh. Hill doesn’t objective consume things too far; he takes them to limits no one else would dare to. Glance AND Describe is not a comedy for the squeamish, but it’s certainly a film for those of us who don’t mind a few chills with our comical thrills.

Not to say that writer/director Jody Hill is the fresh Scorscese (he’s not), but I was constantly reminded of Scorscese’s early 80s disturbo-comedy “King of Comedy” when watching this. Whereas Scorscese uses stark realism, though, Hill uses the conventions and expectations of novel comedy to nail us. This could have easily been another shameful and gross comedy along the lines of Superbad or Pineapple Suppose. Those (hell, most) comedies made today feature borderline-sociopathic, emotionally-retarded, and hopelessly immature males. Hill simply tips his characters over the edge. There is no denying that Ronnie (Seth Rogan) is a full-blown psychopath. What’s surprising is how terminate this character is to every other character Seth Rogan has ever played!
